Shelter Groves

The planting of shelter groves, display gardens, and general landscaping around the Eco-Centre was initiated in May, 2004. The shelter groves are intended to act as windbreaks and noise barriers, create habitat for wildlife, increase the biodiversity of the area, and contribute to carbon sequestration as it applies to climate change.

The shelter groves are located between the Louis Riel Trail (Highway # 11) and the Eco-Village. The shelter groves feature 55 species (click here for pdf file of species list).

Xeric Garden

The Botanical Xeric Garden, completed in November of 2005, consists of 298 species of grasses, perennials, bulbs, shrubs, vines, and trees. It is located on the slope to the east of the Eco-Centre. The Garden is used to demonstrate and educate people about site reclamation and naturalization, the rich diversity of native plants as well as exotic plants that are suited to prairie conditions, and xeriscape (low water use) strategies (click here for pdf file of species list)

The selection and design of the shelter groves and xeric garden was done by Alan Weninger. Financial assistance for the Craik Planting project was obtained from Environment Canada's EcoACTION Community Funding Program, Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management (SERM) with in-kind support from the RM of Craik, Town of Craik, SaskPower Shand Greenhouse, Craik Community Challenge-Mid-Lakes Region One-Tonne Challenge) and many volunteers.
